AI Futures Policy Lab: Vancouver summary

CIFAR & The Brookfield Institute convened with 22 Vancouver-based policymakers to discuss the future of AI

On October 18, 2018, CIFAR and the Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship (BII+E) convened 22 emerging policy makers from across sectors in Vancouver, British Columbia at Microsoft Canada’s downtown campus. Among the participants were emerging policy leaders from the public, private, academic, and not-for-profit sectors. The event in Vancouver was the third in a series of labs that CIFAR and BII+E have been hosting with the goal of exploring the future of artificial intelligence policy in Canada. The first took place in Toronto in summer 2018, with labs following across the country throughout the rest of 2018 and early 2019.

These labs aim to raise awareness of current AI capabilities and applications, increase the ability of policymakers to respond to AI developments, and contribute to early thinking around AI policy in Canada. Overall, labs are designed to encourage critical thinking, support collaborative brainstorming, and facilitate the development of policy recommendations in relation to current AI capabilities.
